As Joe Lovano has stated, "some of the hippest bandleaders and composers in jazz, have come from the drum chair"; so many that Howard has at least several more CDs worth of music composed by drummers that he'd like to record, so be on the lookout for the possibility of "Drum Lore, Vol. 2". 4. Owen Howard's More Lore: Drum Lore, Vol. 2 is a good one as well. I picked it up to hear more of Adam Kolker (the band also includes John O'Gallagher, Frank Carlberg and Johannes Weidenmueller). Bob Kindred is probably known a little better than Ray Alexander, but he was a helluva saxophonist who flies under the radar.

9. Drum Lore is a very interesting and entertaining listen and covers a wide range of tempos and moods. It is quite different from the sequel CD, Drum Lore, Vol 2, which features the same quintet throughout (including Kolker and O'Gallagher but regrettably not Middleton) and is more cohesive.5/5(1).
